We were kind of up in the air as to when we were leaving Yellowstone…and then it snowed. It had rained almost everyday we were there, but it was the acceptable brief, late afternoon, after a warm day, thunderstorm kind of rain. So it wasn’t too much of a bother. But snow is completely out of the question. Yellowstone was telling us it’s time to go…and we were listening. We drove out through West Yellowstone and up into Montana. Read more…

The Yellowstone Experience
All told we spent nearly a month in Yellowstone. It’s so close to Teton National Park (less than 20 miles) that it’s essentially two parks in one, so…that’s not as long as it sounds. The first week-ish we spent with my Brother mostly in Yellowstone, and that was really great fun. In fact, the ONLY thing we miss from our previous life is that we don’t get to spend nearly as much time with them as we used to.
Sorry, but you’re gonna see a lot of pictures of the Tetons…I’m fascinated!
After they left we turned our focus towards the Tetons. Read more…
The Muy Grande Tetons
ANOTHER DAY ENDS IN THE TETONS
“It would be easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter heaven.” Anyone know who gets the credit for that statement? That would be none other than Jesus Christ himself…so the story goes. I’m not a religious guy, in the traditional sense anyway, so I don’t follow the game too closely, but that sure seems like a far cry from what I hear today…in a supposedly Christian nation. Just sayin…
On The Road Again…Into Yellowstone
Repairs completed, we happily declared ourselves road ready and got back to it. Along the way Carson and I were listening to a report on the radio about amazon.com. It seems that rather than air condition their warehouses they find it more cost effective to have ambulances waiting outside to remove their employees who collapse from heat exhaustion. My first thought was: Man…I know first hand how unbearable it is in Indonesia. Read more…
It’s Supposed to be Fun People
We Met Richard Nixon…ok…Nickson
THE NICKSONS
We drove through the western part of Colorado, about 250 miles in four days, a new record – for us anyway. We wanted to get into Yellowstone and spend as much time there as we could with my brother who…well…let’s just say that he adheres to a much tighter schedule than we do. Read more
The “High” Country
Pun intended. It turns out our friend Russ from Mesa Verde was right. What an incredibly beautiful drive! Read more
Mesa Verde…the Un-National Park
Mesa Verde is the strangest National Park…and I mean that in in a good way…that we’ve been to. It’s pretty small, not very picturesque, rarely crowded, easy to get a campsite, has excellent wifi, and free showers twenty-four hours a day. All definitely un-National Park like. Read more

The Ultimate Campground Host
We’ve met A LOT of campground hosts and many of them are really, really good at their job. But Grizz is what I call a category killer. If you ever find yourself in the Lake Powell area we recommend the Lone Rock Beach campground largely because of Grizz.
We spent nearly three weeks there and although it’s a GREAT place to camp…you can camp on the beach and as close to the water as you dare…Grizz was probably the biggest reason we stayed so long.
After watching him chase down some some pretty rough looking locals who were speeding down the beach one night, we asked him if he ever get’s scared when discharging his duties. “I’ve been shot twice and blown up once”, he said. “I don’t get scared too often anymore.”
We had many great nights on the beach sitting around the fire with Grizz and his companions, Dutchess and Buddy, and we even cooked a super tasty beef brisket together one afternoon in a fire pit that the kids built on the beach and lined entirely with rocks.
If you see Grizz please give him a hearty hello from us…and make sure not to speed on his beach!

Escaping the heat
SUNSET OVER THE LA SAL MOUNTAINS
This was the view from our camp. I can’t quite find the words to do it justice…so I’m just going to shut up about it and let the picture speak for itself.
The heat came as predicted and we headed for cooler climes. It’s only about thirty miles from the river, but it’s thirty miles straight up. Aspen groves, creeks, and World Class mountain biking abound! A hundred years ago we probably would have thrown up a cabin and called it a day.
